Flour Alternatives for SHTF

We face uncertainty with our supplies these days and while we can certainly store buckets of wheat berries or all-purpose flour, it won’t last forever or be available all the time so below I’ve made a list of alternatives for you and recommend you start studying which one’s are worth investing in for your particular property.

  • Acorns
  • Almond
  • Amaranthus
  • Arrowroot
  • Banana
  • Birch Bark
  • Buckwheat
  • Cat Tails
  • Cauliflower
  • Chestnuts
  • Chia
  • Chickpea
  • Coconut
  • Corn
  • Crab Grass
  • Dandelion
  • Flax
  • Hazelnuts
  • Kudzu
  • Mesquite
  • Millet
  • Oats
  • Parsnip
  • Pecan
  • Pine Bark
  • Plantain
  • Potatoes
  • Quinoa
  • Rice Flour (White or Brown)
  • Rye Grass
  • Sorghum
  • Soy
  • Spelt
  • Tapioca (aka Cassava Plant)
  • Wild Rice

This is by no means the most extensive list out there, but this is enough to get you started thinking about what, if any, you can plant on your property or forage as a flour substitute. Many of these flours have incredibly potent flavors and if you do a deep dive, you’ll see which will emulate your typical all-purpose flour best. There are some plants that require special instructions for preparation, such as acorn flour due to toxic contents, so please take the time now to research as much as you can.
